Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivans Tend to Catch Fire, Be Careful Where You Park

The Pacifica is one of Chrysler’s most successful models. Introduced for the first time not that many years ago, the van is at the top of the sales charts in its segment, and that makes any potentially dangerous fault a major issue for the carmaker.
After it became aware of at least one minor injury and several other incidents (all have been reported in Canada) caused by the Pacifica catching fire apparently out of the blue, the American carmaker announced this week a recall that even if is not extensive, could potentially save property and even lives in some cases.

FCA believes the 12-volt battery that provides power to things like the radio and remote-control garage-door opener may experience an issue with one of its connections that could lead to the vehicles catching fire.

The company says the issue affects Pacifica Hybrid minivans made between 2017 and 2020 (27,634 of them), and not their gasoline-only powered counterparts. FCA also stresses that the problem is confined to the 12-volt battery and it does not affect the high-voltage battery, nor the electrified propulsion system.

Owners of affected vehicle wild start being notified shortly and directed to a dealer for an inspection. Depending on what is found, the connection will either be tightened or repaired.

In the meantime, FCA asks Pacifica Hybrid owners not to park their vehicles inside structures or near other vehicles.

“In the interim, FCA recommends – out of an abundance of caution – that customers avoid parking their vehicles inside buildings or structures. In addition, FCA advises customers not to park near other vehicles, or place wet items or liquids that may spill in the second-row seating area,” the carmaker said.

Full details on the issue as announced by FCA as well as ways to find out whether your minivan is affected can be found in the press release section attached below.
