Described as the launching pad for innovation and technology with the potential to change the world, the Consumer Technology Association’s show in Las Vegas is where the magic happens. At the next edition of the show, slated for January 2017, hearsay suggests that even Chrysler has something in store for us. And would you believe it that something is an electric minivan?
A report published by Bloomberg notes that the people who shared the information are knowledgeable on the matter, though they’ve “asked not to be identified because the plans are private.” In other words, it’s highly likely for the Chrysler Pacifica EV to be nothing but whitewash. Still, let’s try to take off our sensible shoes for a second and take this rumor as being real.
Chrysler. Pacifica. EV. Of course it makes sense when you think about it. Believe it or not, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which is actually a plug-in hybrid, is the sole PHEV currently on offer from FCA. And when I say FCA, I’m referring to the whole group, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari included. It’s clear, then, that a big change is in the offing by the end of the decade.
The cited publication also mentions that “FCA is also working on an electric Maserati sports car, which aims to compete with Tesla.” I can see that happening as well to be honest with you, chiefly because suck-squeeze-bang-blow is yesteryear’s news. While on the subject of Italian thoroughbreds, it’s definitely worth noting that the purported Maserati EV would have a direct competitor in the form of the upcoming Porsche Mission E-based sports car.
Whatever happens on January 3, 2017, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is an impressive machine in its own right. With 33 miles in EV mode to its name, the Pacifica Hybrid is rated by the EPA at 84 MPGe. However, the advertised eco-friendliness doesn’t come cheap. At $41,995 for the no-frills specification, the Pacifica Hybrid is a lot more expensive than the V6-only base model.
