Chrysler Introduces New Pentastar V6 Engine

As part of Chrysler’s rebirth process, the company is introducing a new Pentastar V6 engine that will make its way under the hood of 13 models.

The automaker describes the unit as being its most advanced six-cylinder powertrain and expects it to account for over a third of the engines in its vehicle range and bring an important contribution to an overall line-up fuel efficiency improvement of over 25 percent by 2014.

The new Pentastar V6 has a displacement of 3.6 liters and delivers 305 hp at 6,350 rpm, a figure that can be translated into a 55 hp increase over the company’s previous 3.5 liter V6. The torque output has also been increased, with the unit offering 268 lb-ft (363 lb-ft) at 4,800 rpm.

The powerplant is shorter than its predecessor, allowing engine packaging constraints to be reduced. For example, on the 2011 Challenger, this allows engineers to improve both the intake flow and exhaust flow, offering more power.

The unit doesn’t require an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and meets Federal Tier 2 BIN 5 emission requirements, as well as Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II Standards, including LEV III and PZEV California standards. For export applications, the engine meets Euro 6 standards. The engine is designed to run on regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87, as well as E85 blend gasoline.

The Pentastar engine is suited to meet the requirements for a full range of vehicle applications in terms of power and fuel efficiency including passenger cars, mini-vans and sport utilities,” explained Bob Lee, vice president of engine engineering for Chrysler Group LLC. “It has been designed for today and many years to come. Already, we are looking forward to adapting future technologies as they become available to the Pentastar V-6 for even more fuel efficiency and performance.
