A Chinese restaurant in Colorado is the living example of how you should make lemonade when life hands you lemons. Or, in this particular case, of how you can make art out of the scene of a car crash.
It happened in Grand Junction, Colorado, earlier this week, when a careless driver slammed into the Sang Garden Chinese Restaurant, NBC affiliate KKCO11 News reports. Apparently, the driver “stepped on the gas after they thought they had put the car in park, and launched forward.”
The result was a gaping hole in the side of the restaurant, but since the business can’t afford to shut down until repairs are made, they came up with the idea to board the whole thing up and leave it at that until the insurance money comes in.
And this is where the story gets a little of the Christmas magic. One of the employees decided to use the wooden boards to express himself artistically, so he covered them in Christmas imagery. He also included a drawing of a red car smashing into a wall, because humor is, after all, the best remedy.
Now, the restaurant is seeing more clients than ever. They’re attracted by the story, but also by the beautiful art that decorates what was once a solid wall.
“I'm hoping people feel inspired by it,” Roxanne Harvey, a waitress, tells the media outlet. “But certainly we've had lots of customers come in and be like ‘oh, you guys are still open and you guys are serving food. I'm surprised by how warm it is in the restaurant with that gaping hole.’ We've just had a lot of positivity and support come in just from the community in general.”
The owner says that the hole will eventually covered up, but the insurance people are slow to get back to him. He doesn’t say what will happen to the Christmas art once the wall will be rebuild, but if your guess is that it will be discarded, you’re probably right.
