In the latest episode of /DRIVE, Chris Harris gets behind the wheel of the 2014 BMW 535d model to talk about diesel performance and BMW expectations.
Sure, when a typical American goes for a BMW he doesn’t really feel the need to go with a diesel. The most popular models in the US are 3-liter petrol version or even bigger variants but it’s not exclusively the customers’ fault but also the company’s because diesel models are not present on the market in a wide variety.
Either way, if you’re interested in a diesel 5 Series and you live in the United States, Chris tells you everything you need in this review. The US-spec 535d has a 3-liter diesel engine under the bonnet that makes 258 HP and 560 Nm of torque, plenty even for a heavy 5er like this.
In Europe, the 535d has 2 turbochargers and gets 313 HP from a 3-liter engine and 630 Nm of torque, quite a big difference. However, both cars feel instantly quick and agile, despite the 55 HP difference, torque being the decisive factor here. I’ll let Chris take over here...
