Not only is the waiting list quite demotivational, but it’s already known that the Chinese pay double the money for the Model S compared to US buyers because of freight costs and import duties. Good, this we know, but once you do finally get the luxury EV charging it shouldn’t be expensive or difficult, right? Well, not according to this owner who simply tapped into the local electric transmission line on a utility pole.
Before looking into this peculiar case, we’d like to remind you that all Tesla Motors customers in China who bought their cars after January 1st get a free charging station and installation. Yes, but that doesn’t mean there’s no need for superchargers spread around the country. OK, the range is impressive, but what are you supposed to do when you’re left out of e-juice?

That’s pretty much how this Tesla Model S owner seems to have thought since he found himself stranded while traveling to the country side near Shanghai. Could he have called a towing truck? Of course. Not only was this possible, but it would have been the most prudent way to recharge his car. After all, why would anybody want to risk filling the car with unregulated voltage spikes or dips?

Not to say that the guy could have risked to get hurt. Yet, it seems he most likely knew what he was doing since it appears there’s some sort of hand-made transformer he’s using.

Question is, can a Tesla Model S get recharged by simply tapping into the local electric transmission line on a utility pole like that? Technically, if you manage to make the proper charger for the EV then the answer is yes. Like we said, not only do you risk to burn all the circuits, but you would also risk your life. Then, there’s also the temporal aspect, since it would most likely take several hours to get the battery fully charged.
