Not that we are not accustomed with the idea of seeing similar (and quite often uglier) autos inspired from the Western carmakers in China, but every now and then we stumble upon some really odd examples. That is exactly the case with this peculiar electric four-door vehicle spotted at the Shandong EV Expo the other day.
Hey, we get it. At some point being original is almost impossible, especially when it comes to an industry that is worth billions. But we believe that a small effort to avoid creating replicates of patented models can be done, if not have to. The particular orange EV in question is the “work of art” of VIDOEV, a low-speed electric vehicles, electric minivans and electric minibuses manufacturer located west of Jinan, in the town of Zouping.
Apart from the obvious difference in the number of doors this weirdness comes with, it also appears that VIDOEV’s model is about an inch longer and four inches wider than the 21st Century Beetle model. According to CarNewsChina, the vehicle is so far a prototype, but even thought it might look like an experiment it is about to reach the market as late as early next year.
At a quick peek, you’ll identify the same dash and dials the famous VW model comes with. Other than that, there’s not much of modern technology on board, considering that even the rechargeable battery positioned under the rear bench is an lead-acid old-school model.
Fun fact: since the car does not have a name yet, even the staff present at the EV fair calling it the “Beetle-style car”.
