Restrictive measures like only allowing people to drive every other day might seem restrictive and harsh, but the People's Republic of China is choking on its own success.
The country is now the biggest buyer of new cars in the world, and the pace of growth is still strong. According to Bloomberg, the number of new registered cars in China last year is higher then the total number of cars that were on the road in 1999, just 14 years ago.
According to a statement made by the Ministry of Public Security, 240 million vehicles are now in use, half of those being cars.
During 2012, 15.1 million new cars were added and the number is expected to grow to 20 million this year as more and more foreign makers are setting up factories in the country.
With so many cars out there, pollution is obviously a problem, and according to the US embassy, pollution readings reached “hazardous” levels on 20 of January's 31 days.
