As if the Chinese domestic automakers don’t have enough offerings, a new car brand is on the horizon. Dubbed Cowin Auto, this will actually be a sub-brand of Chery, aimed at selling, you guessed it, budget models.
The new brand is aiming to make use of a booming segment of the market that sees young buyers seeking new cars they can afford. Cowin Auto, whose Chinese designation is translated into Kayi, is set to debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in September, as car news china writes.
Cowin will thus recycle several Chery Automobile models, with the company having serious plans, which will translate into a wide range of models. Just don’t expect their designations to pass as poetry.
The automaker’s range will start with the what was previously knows as the Chery Cowin 1 and Chery Cowin 2 small sedans, while a sedan with slightly larger dimensions, the Chery Cowin 3. The list also includes the Chery Cowin SUV, as well as... the sporty-looking Chery A3 hatchback and sedan (no, these have nothing to do with Audi) and the Chery E3 sedan.
Aside from these, Cowin Auto will also get new (more or less) models, such as yet another sporty-looking compact sedan, a dynamic-looking crossover, as well as an SUV. These three models are to be built around the same architecture, with the first to hit the road set to be the SUV, which should come to the market next year.
China continues to hold its position as the world’s largest car market. If you want to talk figures, we’ll mention the 8.2 percent year-on-year increase the country has registered for the first seven months of 2014, when 13.3 million cars were sold.
