China Has an Anti-Drone Laser Gun Now

Drones are starting to invade our lives. Whether someone wants to deliver a package, spy something or even rescue a person, these unmanned flying vehicles are trying to integrate within our daily activities, but they could be dangerous if used on purpose. China doesn't want drones nosing around and just unveiled a laser weapon to shoot them down in case of an emergency, a project that should be developed by more countries.

The China Academy of Engineering Physics unveiled and successfully tested a laser defense system especially targeting small UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) flying low.

Their gun, which sticks out of a camouflaged metal box, is powerful enough to destroy a drone within a two-kilometer (1.2 mile) radius and a height bellow 500 meters (1,640 ft), flying at a maximum speed of 50 meters per second (164 ft/sec).

Normally, snipers and helicopters were tasked with taking down intrusive drones up until now, but that’s not as precise and mistakes could lead to collateral damage.

The new laser system, which can be mounted on a vehicle or left stationary, has reportedly shot down more than 30 drones, registering a 100% success rate. And this won’t be all, as the academy said they will continue researching to create an even more powerful laser that will provide an extended range.
