It’s a known fact that the Chinese market is currently the largest one in the world for all things automotive. The high demand is not only focused on volume models though, but exclusive, luxurious limousines as well and, at the moment, Mercedes-Maybach is one of the best in the biz.
That’s why the three-pointed star manufacturer didn’t delay the introduction of its luxobarge any longer and now, the Chinese can buy the Maybach brand in S600 and S400 guises. The cheaper model will start at CNY1.3 million which translates into roughly $229,000 at today’s exchange rates while the top of the range model asks CNY2.88 million or $462,000.
Looking over these prices, you’d think that the Stuttgart-based company has lost its mind but you’d be wrong. The thing is, companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi made it a habit out of selling their luxurious cars in China with huge price spikes.
To get a better idea of the difference we’ll tell you that in the US the S600 starts at $189,350 while the S400 will be even cheaper since it comes only with a 3-liter biturbo V6 that puts out 330 HP and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque.
The S600 on the other hand pushed down the road by an impressive 6-liter V12 with two turbos attached to it, squeezing out 530 HP and 612 lb-ft (830 Nm) of torque. Both cars use a 7-speed automatic gearbox that’s been tuned for more comfort rather than dynamic capabilities.
Since this is wearing the Maybach name, you should expect the best in terms of fit and finish and comfort. Standard features include Magic Body Control suspension, a Driver Assistance Package (Intelligent Drive), Night View Assist PLUS, a Warmth and Comfort Package with a heated windshield, head-up display and LED Intelligent Lighting.
Customers are more likely to spend their time in the back so entertainment features such as the Burmeister 3D audio system, the Executive Rear Seat Package and a Rear Seat Entertainment System also will be included as standard. For the rest of them you’ll have to pay.
But that doesn’t seem like a big deal in China where the average price for a used Maybach sits around CNY2.68 million or $430,000. That’s right, they want the best and with plenty of options on it.
