Chevy Volt to Get 240V Chargers

After revealing most of the details regarding the Volt plug-in hybrid last month, American manufacturer GM is getting ready to reveal the remaining pieces of the puzzle which will make up its first electric vehicle (or partially electric vehicle).

According to Freep, GM will reveal soon the name of a supplier which will sell an optional 240-volt charging device for the Volt. The charger would allow the Volt to cut down on that somewhat big charging time.

Currently, the vehicle comes equipped with a 120 volt electric cord which can be used to recharge the batteries in some eight to ten hours. The new unit would allow the Volt to recharge its batteries in three to four hours.

"We will be partnering with a provider that will go ahead and take care of our home installations on a nationwide basis," GM engineering specialist Gery Kissel was quoted as saying by Freep.

The Chevrolet Volt, only one of the 16 plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles which will go on sale in the course of the next two years in the US, is priced at $41,000, or $33,500 net of full federal income tax credit. A lease program is also available for as low as $350 for 36 months and a down payment of only $2,500.

The Volt will be initially launched in late 2010 in California, powered by lithium-ion batteries which will give it a range of up to 40 miles without the use of the internal combustion engine. With the help of the petrol engine, the total range can be increased to some 300 miles.
