Chevy Volt Gets 93 MPGE EPA Rating

All the pieces of the soon to be war between the Chevrolet Volt PHEV and the Nissan Leaf EV are slowly falling into place. Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the rating for the Leaf and yesterday it did the same for the Volt.

The Americans' entry in the EV market has been rated at 93 mpg in electric mode alone and at 60 mpg when using both the batteries and the internal combustion engine. For comparison, the Nissan Leaf has been rated at 99 mpg in electric mode.

But, as GM says, not even an official EPA label can guarantee anything: “with its ability to operate completely gasoline- and emissions-free for 25 to 50 miles and then continue indefinitely with its range- extending engine, the Volt’s energy efficiency depends on how you use it.”

Of course, the “mpg” word used for EVs and PHEVs running in electric mode is only to be considered as a guide as, of course, there are no “gallons” of anything in there. The rating, officially named mpg equivalent (mpge), has been created in an attempt to make the purchase process for consumers easier. This rating is defined as a measure of distance traveled per unit energy consumption.

So, here you have it. The Leaf, with its 99 mpge, is leading the consumption battle. The Volt, with its 93 mpge and internal combustion engine is leading the range battle. It all comes down, probably, to a matter of personal choice: will you go for an American car, or a Japanese one?
