Chevy Unveils New 2014 Corvette Stingray Benchmarks

The seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was this year's most awaited US car. In fact, we would say it still is since deliveries haven't started yet.

The C7 Corvette also means a huge step forward for Chevy in terms of technology and comfort with its new interior design and lightweight "smart material", just to name a few.

It's been more than a month since the sportscar was unveiled in Detroit, and we still get to write about the new Corvette in a benchmark-related manner after Autoblog discovered some very interesting stuff after talking to a few people Chevrolet.

Though we might not see it at first glance, the Corvette now comes with much smaller body panel gaps when compared to the previous generation. According to chief engineering Tagde Juechter, the gaps were reduced to just three millimeters thanks to new fiberglass technology that doesn't allow the body panels to expand in hot weather. The C6 had five-millimeter gaps so you do the math…

And that's not all. Engine boss Jordan Lee had something interesting to say about the new LT1 engine as well. Because of its Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation that turns the 6.2-liter V8 powerplant into a 3.1-liter V4 during low-load phases, "average fuel economy should be 26 mpg at least". That's highway mileage of course, but we don't mind if it gets better than that, which is better than any C6 Vette.
