Conquest incentives aren’t all that uncommon in the United States, more so in segments as competitive as the one in which the Ford Mustang is king of the hill. The Camaro is doing so badly in 2019 that even the Dodge Challenger sold more units in the first quarter of the year.
So what did Chevrolet do in order to take back some of the market share? The 2019 Camaro is available with a total cash allowance of $2,500 as long as you own a ‘Stang, bringing the price of the 1LS down to $23,495 in the process. That’s a $3,175 advantage over the Mustang EcoBoost with the six-speed manual, but looking at the bigger picture, it’s all for naught.
Chevrolet made a hash out of the mid-cycle refresh of the Camaro Gen 6, letting Ford have the upper hand with better styling and a more powerful option than the ZL1 1LE in the form of the Shelby GT500. It’s worth remembering that GM build quality is on a downward spiral as well, and in the ‘Maro, the plastics on the door cards and dashboard are horrifying.
GM Authority reports the $2,500 discount applies to Mustang lessees too, and there are two more points which need highlighting. More to the point, the Camaro with this cash allowance is not available with lease and other offers while customers must take delivery by September 3rd.
There’s no doubt Chevrolet is trying to move 2019 stock as much as possible in order to get the 2020 Camaro in the showrooms and dealer lots. Everyone else – a.k.a. people who don’t own a Ford Mustang – are treated to $500 customer cash when purchasing the 2019 Camaro.
After canceling the LT1-equipped model in Europe over emissions regulations, Chevrolet is also understood to have canceled the Z/28 program for the Camaro Gen 6. As if that wasn’t enough, the Gen Seven program is reportedly suspended according to “multiple sources.”
