Ford has a hard job at hand with the next Mustang, but GM’s head of global design isn’t having an easier time with the new Corvette, which according to an Automotive News post will debut in the fall of 2013 as a 2014 model year.

"You want it to be a new design, but it needs to be recognizable as a Corvette,"
says Welburn during an interview at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The new design desperately needs to appeal to younger customers, as sales have dropped to 12,624 Corvettes last year, the lowest level since the early 60s. In the past decade, the best year was 2006, when 36,518 sportscars found new homes, which is about three times the current result.

Rumor has it, it will also have a small V8 engine with turbocharging.
