Chevrolet might offer a compressed natural gas-powered (CNG) version in the near future, as part of the automaker’s strategy to flip the current fleet-to-retail to a more profitable 30:70 ratio.
This piece of information comes via The Motoring Journal, who spotted a batch of next-generation Impalas testing in Colorado almost uncamouflaged. From their pictures, we can notice that the vehicles are wearing “CNG” stickers and different exhaust outlets. Furthermore, the engines have different covers as well.
The guys over at Autoblog took this a little further and asked Chevrolet about their future CNG Impala, with the company replying that their still studying the demand for such passenger vehicles: “We do offer a CNG van and a bi-fuel pickup truck, but still studying the demand for CNG powered passenger cars. Infrastructure is a consideration for anyone buying these types of vehicles. Unfortunately, there's nothing to announce today on this front.”
While Chevy has yet to confirm it, we do think that a CNG Impala will show up in dealerships, most probably in 2015, since Opel is already offering compressed natural gas vehicles and got a lot of praise for their Insignia.
