Remember when Trailblazer used to be written TrailBlazer? Those days have gone by, and Chevrolet is an extremely different automaker in this day and age. New for 2020, the Trailblazer is now available to order in China with a 1.3-liter turbo that develops 162 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque.
That’s 164 PS and 240 Nm in metric, delivered at 5,600 and between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. As for the wrong stuff, the EcoTec engine is a three-cylinder turbo and a CVT comes standard. Customers can also opt for the nine-speed automatic from the Hydra-Matic family, a gearbox that Ford kindly refused in favor of an eight-speed automatic transmission in models such as the Edge.

Those who get the Hydra-Matic are also treated to all-wheel drive that can be activated in 0.2 seconds by pressing a switch. Chevrolet quotes 9.3 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph) in this configuration, along with a fuel economy of 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers (35.1 miles to the gallon). Getting the CVT with front-wheel drive translates to 9.1 seconds to 100 km/h and 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers (39.8 miles to the gallon), which is a bit curious by all accounts.

Underpinned by the GM VSS-F platform (Vehicle Strategy Set – Front), the Trailblazer will be available in the United States next year for 2021 as the smaller brother to the Blazer. Chevrolet dropped a press release in May 2019 in regard to the newcomer, but the golden bowtie also keeps quiet on the oily bits of the crossover positioned right above the Chevy Trax.

Trailblazer is a continuation of the design language for Chevy’s crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments,” said Steve Majoros, director of passenger car and crossover marketing. Something else we know about the all-new model is standard active safety in the guise of front pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, the whole nine yards for this segment.

The question is, would you buy one if Chevy were to offer the 1.3-liter EcoTec as the only engine?
