Chevrolet SS Tested

Car guys out there always talk about how cool it is to drive a sleeper and, apparently somebody over at General Motors has paid attention to this. The result is called Chevrolet SS and we’ve recently had a go in it to see what this performance sedan comeback story is all about.

GM has welcomed the go-fast sedan back into its lineup after a 17-year hiatus and, judging by how nicely the LS3 V8 up front is treating us, they’ve done a pretty nifty job.

Oh, by the way, those sleeper looks we were talking about came via Australia, since the SS is actually a rebadged Holden Monaro Commodore. So what? As long as the car is keeping it real, we do not mind this.

Getting back to the LS3 V8 engine, the unit has been slightly downtuned compared to the Corvette C6 it is based on, but it still packs quite a punch. The engine is on par with the rest of the car, bringing a nice, balanced setup. There’s no active suspension, the dampers are passive and yet the end result is superb. The Chevrolet SS knows how to keep you comfortable while delivering plenty of kicks. Driving this every day is a pleasure.

Of course, the thing has its dark sides and the interior design is one of these. While the exterior gets away with the sleeper excuse, the lack of an identity can’t be redeemed when it comes to the cabin.

Nonetheless, the Chevrolet SS interior only comes in black, being nicely sprinkled with leather and Alcantara. The story goes on beyond the materials in our Chevrolet SS review.
