Chevrolet Sonic Gets Honeywell Turbocharger

Presented to the American public during the North American International Auto Show last week, the Chevrolet Sonic (the US-spec, rebadged Chevrolet Aveo), is getting ready to meet its customers later this year.

Until then, however, there are a few more things you should know about the model, and we're sure more and more info about it will be released in the weeks to come. But now, it's time to talk about turbochargers.

The Sonic will get a power boost by using some Honeywell tech, bringing the overall output of the 1.4l engine to 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. The increase in power does not affect the mileage, with the model expected to register 40 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg better than the unit is able to achieve on the slightly bigger Cruze.

"We have entered the modern era of turbochargers in the U.S.,"
said Alex Ismail, Honeywell Transportation Systems CEO. "Car makers have made the decision that turbos will play a key role to help them deliver high performing engines that improve fuel efficiency.”

“The future for turbo gasoline and diesel engines in the U.S. has never been brighter and we have seen some industry experts estimate turbo penetration to reach nearly 80% over the next decade as turbo gasoline, turbo hybrids and modern clean turbo diesels gain traction."

The car will arrive on the market later this year with the aforementioned engine, but also with a bigger, yet less powerful Ecotec 1.8l. Both sedan and hatchback versions will be offered for prices yet to be announced.
