The golden bowtie has a knack for special edition pickup trucks. The quarter-ton Silverado and the Colorado are the darlings. For all that, the mid-sized Colorado can wait because today we’ll talk about the Silverado High Desert, due to go on sale this fall.
Pricing hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing, but I can tell you that the High Desert package is based on a concept truck presented two years ago at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show. It’s a little watered down from the Silverado Special Ops Concept, but hey, the essential bits and bobs have found their way into production.

See the lockable, covered cargo bed? That’s a nod to the Chevrolet Avalanche, a pickup truck based on the Suburban. Make no mistake about it, the lockable storage system is worth it because it’s all things to all men. Installed over the roll-formed steel bed, the system adds a three-piece tonneau cover, dual side storage bins, and a cargo divider.

Available on the LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels, “the High Desert package blends the capability and utility of Silverado with the refinement and luxury of Suburban,” as per Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet truck marketing. Told you this is a nod to the now-defunct Avalanche.

What else do you get? Well, the High Desert treatment on the LT adds 20-inch wheels shod in all-season rubber shoes. 22-inch wheels and all-terrain tires are available on the LTZ and High Country. If you’re willing to spend top dollar on a High Country with the High Desert treatment, Chevy will offer you Magnetic Ride Control suspension as an optional extra. Thanks to damping changes every 5 milliseconds or so, the fancy shocks iron out asphaltic imperfections for a serene ride.

Customers who want the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine should know that the most powerful engine offered in a light-duty truck is only available on the LTZ and High Country models. The 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) unit isn’t just on par with the Chevrolet Corvette’s small-block V8 engine in terms of torque, but it’s also coupled with a more utilitarian version of the Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic.
