GM’s first diesel engine for its full-size pickup truck line up, which includes the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, could be a 4.5-liter V8, said company vice president of global powertrain Steve Kiefer.
The 4.5-liter oil burner is not a new concept, but an engine that was supposed to go into production about five years ago. Cancelled when bankruptcy struck the manufacturer in 2008, the V8 mill could be back on GM's table, Kiefer suggested.
“We are looking closely at diesel entrees in that segment. In fact, I heard the terms ‘dust off’ that 4.5-liter at one point. That is certainly one of the options. Clearly, we have a portfolio of diesel engines,” he told Automotive News.
The 2014 Ram 1500 is the only full-size pickup truck that offers a diesel option. The first EcoDiesel Rams, which are powered by a 3.0-liter V6, are expected to hit Chrysler dealerships next month.
