Good news Corvette fans, there’s no turbo V6 under the C7’s hood like the false rumors suggested. INstead, when the all-new 2014 Corvette arrives next year, it will do so powered by a brand new LT1 motor, the first of the Gen 5 family of Small Block engines, combines several advanced technologies, including direct injection, Active Fuel Management (like cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing.
The new LT1 displaces 6.2 liters and will be rated at 450 hp and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm). It will help the C7 Corvette sprint from 0 to 60 (96 km/h) in less than four seconds. By comparison the C6 has a 430 hp LS3 motor and reaches 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
It’s expected that with all these new technologies, this will not only be the fastest basic Corvette, but also the most economical, at 26 mpg highway (9.05 l/100km).
“Our objective for the development of the all-new LT1 was to raise the bar for performance car engines,” said Mary Barra, senior vice president, global product development. “We feel that we have achieved that by delivering a true technological masterpiece that seamlessly integrates a suite of advanced technologies that can only be found on a handful of engines in the world.
“What makes this engine truly special is the advanced combustion system that extracts the full potential of these technologies. The art and science behind that combustion system make the Corvette LT1 one of the most advanced V-8 engines in the world,” said Barra.
