Chevrolet Racing Gives Us a Lesson in Logistics

Corvette Racing thinks that the svelte cars and professional drivers receive a lot of glory, all of it in fact, but it’s the people working behind the scenes to make sure everything is just right that keep everything running perfectly on the big race day. That’s why they’ve launched another episode in their Track to Street series, called “A (Race) Day in the Life”, which is all about racing logistics.

The crew has a lot of things to worry about and they are all crucial, the wheels, the tires, the engine. Than there’s taking care of the drive, who needs a professional fireproof suite, helmet and other protective gear, all of near-perfect quality. The job isn’t done when the car hits the track - pit stops, driver feedback, managing the car for the track conditions. It all sounds a bit like a boxing coach trying to help his prized fighter from losing his cool as well.

After the race is done, the logistics team has to pack all their gear, spare tires, tools, then check the car for damage and put it all in the trucks to race another day. It all needs to go back in one particular order to fit, and there is little extra room.

By letting us focus on the logistics, strategy, and practical aspects of keeping a team running, the video wants to remind us that racing is not about expensive cars and well payed drivers, it’s truly a team sport. Add to that the fact that Corvette Racing’s engineering staff is continually refining the Corvette so it can achieve optimal performance, and you begin to realize it’s not one man plus one machine out there on the field of battle.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
