Set to arrive in US dealerships this spring, with prices starting from $45,890, the redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe could get a visually enhanced trim level, as well as a factory-built high-performance variants sometime in the future.
According to the folks over at Car and Driver, who are quoting a conversation they had with Chevrolet Tahoe engineers and product managers, the former would be marketed as an RS model and fitted with a body kit similar to that of the Tahoe Black concept, which was showcased at the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
However, the Tahoe RS won’t benefit from any power upgrades, which means it will be motivated by the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine that’s standard in the 2015 model. The mill pumps 355 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque and returns an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway in a two-wheel drive version.
The high-performance Tahoe on the other hand, rumored to wear an SS badge, would receive the 6.2-liter V8 unit that generates 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet in the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali.
Chevrolet declined to confirm the vehicles, but company spokesman Michael Albano did say they’re looking at “developing variants of existing products that appeal to consumers and build on our performance heritage”. Well, it looks like we’ll just have to sit back and wait for more info to surface.
Anyway, if you’re looking for a more powerful 2015 Tahoe and you can’t wait around for Chevy to deliver one, then you should start thinking about taking it to Callaway. The Connecticut-based specialist is readying a supercharger package that will increase the 5.3-liter V8’s output up to 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.
The updated includes an Eaton TVS Roots-style supercharger, a liquid-to-air intercooler, a new exhaust system and costs $17,395. The same package can be fitted to the slightly larger 2015 Chevrolet Suburban.
