After quite an absence from the medium-duty truck segment in the United States of America, Chevrolet gave Isuzu a call and asked "Hey, could we badge-engineer your low cabs then sell them as Chevys?" The man at the other end of the line replied "Sure thing!" and voila! What we reported earlier today is now an official agreement and announcement.
There's an interesting aspect to this story though: the Isuzu N-Series lineup of medium-duty low cab trucks are already on sale in the United States, with GCWR ratings ranging from 18,000 lbs (8,164 kg) to 20,500 lbs (9,298 kg). One would ask himself in this instance if the Isuzu N-Series and Chevrolet's trucks will cannibalize sales between each other, but hey, we hope someone at GM did a feasibility study first.

Without further beating around the bush, General Motors informs that the rebadged medium-duty trucks will bear the following monikers for the 2016 model year: Chevrolet 3500, 3500 HD, 4500, 4500 HD, 5500 and 5500 HD. To be procured from Isuzu and sold through Chevrolet dealerships, these workhorses will be available in regular cab and crew cab body styles. What about the engine options?

Starting with Isuzu-sourced 3-liter and 5.2-liter turbo diesel engines, Chevrolet will add a 6-liter V8 gasoline engine and a six-speed automatic transmission for those that prefer the smell of octane-laden dinosaur juice. Oh, here's yet another interesting fact about the 2016 Chevrolet medium-duty truck: the gas-fed V8 model will be built in Charlotte, Michigan.

With chassis lengths ranging from 109 to 212 inches (276.8 to 538.4 cm) and body types that include service bodies, flat/stake bed and a refrigerated box, the Chevrolet medium-duty truck lineup will be a versatile machine for many fleet-dependant businesses. “This addition helps our dealers satisfy their commercial customers’ needs all in one place," added Ed Peper, US VP of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales.
