General Motors has been absent from the medium-duty truck segment since 2009, with the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick. The Isuzu-based Low Cab Forward doesn’t act as a replacement for either model, but there’s an all-new family of workhorses in the offing for the 2019 model year.
At the 2017 State Fair of Texas, Chevrolet confirmed that the Silverado 4500 and Silverado 5500 would reinstate the golden bowtie as a player in the medium-duty truck segment. Scheduled to launch in late 2018, the rebranded model is all-new from the ground up, and possibly based on the next-gen Silverado HD.
Speaking of the HD lineup, the most capable models available for the 2018 model year are the 3500 and Chassis Cab. Equipped with the Duramax turbo diesel, the heavy-duty Silverado models boast 23,200 pounds of maximum towing and up to 31,300 pounds in terms of gross combination weight rating.
“We are earning new business because we have more solutions to help businesses grow,” explains John Schwegman, U.S. director of Commercial Product, Medium Duty. “The Silverado 4500 and 5500 will stand out because we’ve designed the trucks around how customers work. They will be powerful, highly maneuverable and among the easiest trucks on the market to upfit with specialized bodies, such as dump bodies, rollbacks, freight boxes and more.”
Initial details on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500 and the more proficient 5500 are plentiful, with the golden bowtie promising Regular Cab and Crew Cab body styles, as well as 4x2 and 4x4 capability. Duramax diesel power is on the menu, as is an unspecified automatic transmission developed by Allison. In regard to optional extras, prospective customers can look forward to OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot provided by telecom giant AT&T.
Chevrolet is facing stiff competition from Ford Motor Company and FCA's Ram Truck, with the main rivals for the 2019 Silverado 4500 and 5500 coming in the guise of the F-450, F-550, Ram 4500, and Ram 5500.
