Chevrolet Eco Cruze Does 40 MPG

American manufacturer GM announced yesterday it will release the Eco version of the Cruze model in the fourth quarter of the year. Presented at this year's New York Auto Show, the model comes with the promised 40 mpg (5.8l/100 km) on the highway (standard six-speed manual transmission), a fuel economy figure which is the best in the compact segment.

The model is powered by a 1.4l turbocharged Ecotec engine with variable valve timing which develops 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm). With a full tank and the aforementioned fuel consumption rate, the Eco Cruze allows for a range of more than 500 miles (800 km).

"The Cruze Eco delivers hybrid-like efficiency without the price tag,” Jim Campbell, Chevrolet marketing vice president said in a statement.

“Along with the Volt electric vehicle with extended range, it demonstrates how Chevrolet is working to bring new products to market that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.”

Aside for the engine, the axle ratio on the manual-transmission also allows it to cut fuel consumption. The car is expected to deliver a naught to sixty acceleration time of about 10 seconds, while the model equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission is expected to be one second faster.

Eco Cruze will also feature some exterior changes, like lowered ride height, 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels with ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires, lower front air dam extension and lower front grille equipped with air shutter.

The model will be priced at $18,895. GM is also yet to announce the city fuel economy rating for the model.
