General Motors used to offer a turbo diesel engine in the previous-gen Cruze. Despite the impressive fuel economy and the not-too-bad pricing strategy, it didn’t sell well. Now, however, after the Dieselgate scandal took its toll on Satan’s fuel, Chevrolet plans to have another go at selling diesel cars in the United States.
With the advent of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback, General Motors let it slip that yes, the diesel will make a comeback in the compact segment. Not only that, but even the all-new Chevrolet Equinox will be available with an oil-burning motor. Rated by the EPA at 40 mpg (5.88 l/100 km) highway, the 1.6 CDTi diesel is good for an estimated 136 horsepower (101 kW), 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque, and it’s matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

According to a report from MLive, the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback will get the Opel-sourced turbo diesel engine for the 2018 model year. A General Motors official confirmed to the cited publication that a 6-speed manual is also in the offing. It’s very likely that the diesel-ified 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback will be able to return 50 mpg (4.7 liters per 100 kilometers) highway, but only when it’s matched to the all-new GM Hydra-Matic 9T50 9-speed automatic.

Developed in conjunction with the Ford Motor Company, the 9-speeder is a transverse unit designed for FWD applications. By comparison, the 10-speed auto in the Camaro ZL1 and newest F-150 3.5 EcoBoost V6 was developed with rear- and all-wheel-drive in mind. The first General Motors vehicle to get the 9T50, however, will be the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft / 353 Nm of torque).

Across the pond, however, the 1.6 CDTi has another trick up its sleeve. In the Opel Astra K, the engine is also available with two turbochargers. The added suck-squeeze-bang-blow results in 160 PS (158 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque from 1,500 to 2,250 rpm. When coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission, the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 8.6s.
