Chevrolet Cruze BEV Presented

General Motors announced that it has developed an electric version of the Chevrolet Cruze and that this will be included in a demo project in South Korea.

A fleet of Chevrolet Cruze BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) will perform a series of tests in South Korea’s capital, Seoul. The action will debut by the end of October. The Cruze BEVs use batteries provided by LG Chem and electric motors produced by LG electronics.

GM announced that demo fleets with other partners will be launched in urban markets later this year.

The Cruze BEV features a 31-kWh battery that generates a maximum power of 150 kW. This is mounted on the underbody in order to save trunk space.

The vehicle needs 8.2 seconds to cover the 0 to 62 mph sprint and offers a top speed of 102.5 mph (165 km/h). The battery can be fully recharged in 8 to 10 hours using a standard household outlet.

The test program’s aim is do determine multiple real-world data for the vehicles, such as the driving range. On specific tests performed by LG Chem, the vehicles achieved a range of up to 100 miles (160 km). In addition to that, the company is planing to develop a fast-charge system for the cars.

GM currently has no plans of bringing the electric Cruze to the U.S.
