On display at the Los Angeles Auto Show ’til November 30th, the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo is a bit of a letdown if we’re to be completely honest. We expected it to boast with Corvette styling cues and a barchetta body shell, but look at it! Doesn’t it look like it came out of Starcraft?
It’s all futuristic and stuff, looking like a drone with four wheels that came out of Tron. We’re big fans of science fiction, but we are a little disappointed by the fact this is not a proper racecar like Chaparral machines from days long gone. With the past out of the way, we’ll highlight that this car was developed as part of the so-called Vision Gran Turismo project.
An outlandish interpretation of the ultimate race car, developed exclusively for fans of the PlayStation 3 racing simulator Gran Turismo 6, the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo “was created in a no-rules atmosphere to challenge designers and test engineers to deliver the most exhilarating sensations” according to Frank Saucedo, who oversaw the team that worked on the concept.
You’re lucky! The development team cooked up some imaginary figures for those of you that’ll download the vehicle and race it in GT6. As it happens, the Chaparral 2X VGT features a mid-mounted laser beam energy propulsion system, which pulses beams of light that focus in a shroud, creating shock waves that generate tremendous thrust in the lightweight racecar.
With a 671 kW laser powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries and an air-powered generator, the Chaparral 2X VGT provides 900 horsepower worth of thrust. Last but not least, all that mumbo-jumbo is said to provide a 240 mph top speed in the video game, with 0 to 60 acceleration in 1.5 seconds. Wow!

A fantasy car by design, the Chaparral 2X VGT uses, get this, a laser-based propulsion system
I can only imagine the R&D team’s briefing and the laughs cracked when somebody proposed such a sci-fi means of propulsion. If this is what that spirit of innovation into a vision of what the future of racing could hold, well, let’s just say Formula 1 nowadays isn’t that bad after all. So what about that laser, huh? You’re lucky! The development team cooked up some imaginary figures for those of you that’ll download the vehicle and race it in GT6.
