Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT Concept Racecar Teased a Second Time

Back in a time when racers were real men and racing was truly dangerous, blokes Jim Hall and Hap Sharp were founding a small company known as Chaparral Cars in 1962. Few could’ve guessed then how the two racers will be changing motorsport for the better.

Most of their creations, from the 2 all the way to the 2K and radical 2J, employed aerospace-inspired technology and the know-how of Chevrolet Research and Development. As a tribute to its iconic fruitful partnership with Chaparral, GM's volume brand is prepping the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT racer.

Unfortunately, this is not an actual car. As in real, that is. It’s a three dimensional concept racecar developed for the Vision Gran Turismo project, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of PlayStation’s best-selling racing game. If you’re into Gran Turismo 6 and want to race this open-top vehicle from the comfort of your living room’s sofa, you’ll be able to do it via an online update during the holiday season.

Will it be adapted to a real-life racecar?

Well, sorry for keeping you on your toes, but we’re happy to tell you the Corvette-inspired Chaparral 2X VGT is slated to debut in real-life guise at the Los Angeles Auto Show on the 19th of November. “It will serve as an example of what our designers are capable of when they are cut loose, no holds barred,” told Ed Welburn, vice president of General Motors Global Design. “A fantasy car in every sense of the word.”

What the VP of GM Global Design said is rather curious. Our hunch is that General Motors isn’t planning to make a special edition Corvette or an all-new, barchetta-styled track-focused machine. The other detail that caught our attention is that it “will serve an an example of what our designers are capable of.”

Maybe the next-generation C8 Corvette will borrow some styling cues from this concept, who knows. All in all, we're very happy that General Motors is alive and kicking it artsy amid the flurry of safety recalls.
