The Chevrolet Camaro story started in 1966 and it’s far from over. The all-new sixth-generation Camaro is a weapon of mass distraction, but lest we forget the Gen 5 is not the least bit shabby either. But you know how the cookie crumbles in the pony car world - out with the old, in with the new. Without further ado, it pains us to announce that production of the 2015 Camaro ended, but it did so with a bang. More specifically, a red-painted ZL1.
For the 2016 model year, the Chevrolet Camaro got lighter, more powerful, and more agile. But the sixth generation isn’t the focal point of this story. Its predecessor is - the one that’s underpinned by the GM Zeta platform, originally designed for Holden’s VE Commodore and WN Caprice.
That’s right, folks! The backbone of the 2010 to 2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro was developed with Australia in mind. Despite its origin, General Motors did a great job of modifying it to suit the fifth-generation Camaro. We drove the damn thing in RS Convertible and SS Convertible formats and all we have to say is that the Camaro is as memorable and fun as a high school sweetheart.
Throughout its production lifecycle, the Camaro Gen 5 spawned more than 500,000 copies. That’s not too shabby considering that all of them have been sold in the span of 5 model years. From the entry-level V6 to the track-focused Z/28, the fifth-generation Camaro is a large family. Like all good stories, the Gen 5 Camaro story had to come to an end. The Oshawa Assembly Plant up north recently manufactured the car you can admire in the photograph above - he last-ever fifth-gen Camaro.
Configured as a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, this brute churns out 580 horsepower from its supercharged V8 engine. But the burble of that motor won’t be heard too often because this car won’t hit dealership inventory. If you want to pay your respects to the last-ever Camaro Gen 5, the GM Heritage Museum is the place where you’ll find this special machine.
