For the sixth generation of the Chevrolet Camaro, the brand with the golden bowtie gave its pony car a 4-cylinder engine. The 1,998 cc LTG is a force-fed unit with goodies such as SIDI direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger with the bypass valve controlled electronically, and sodium-filled exhaust valves. On paper, the 2.0 LTG is rather impressive.
With 275 HP developed at 5,600 rpm and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque between 3,000 and 4,500 rpm, the Chevrolet Camaro 2.0 Turbo means business. All that performance is priced at $26,695 for the Camaro 1LT with the 6-speed manual transmission. Opt for the GM Hydra-Matic 8L45 8-speed automatic and the base price climbs by $1,495.

What about fuel economy? Well, the EPA rated the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2.0 Turbo 8-speed automatic at 25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km): 22 mpg (10.6 l/100 km) city and 31 mpg (7.5 l/100 km) highway. These numbers are mirrored by the S550-gen Ford Mustang EcoBoost with the 6-speed manual.

The manual version of the turbocharged Camaro, on the other hand, is EPA-rated at 24 mpg (9.8 l/100 km) combined: 21 mpg (11.2 l/100 km) city and 30 mpg (7.8 l/100 km) highway. That’s 1 mpg worse overall compared to the Ford Mustang EcoBoost with the gray-haired 6R80 6-speed automatic.

Another noteworthy difference between the two models is that the EcoBoost is the mid-range Mustang, whereas the 2.0 Turbo is the entry-level Camaro. As such, the main competitor for the base Camaro is the 3.7-liter V6-powered Ford Mustang. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2.0 Turbo started production in February and it is slated to arrive at dealers later this month. As for the one with the rag top, pricing starts at $33,695 (including the $995 destination) for the 1LT with the 2.0 LTG engine.

If you don't want to wait too long to get a Camaro, the 3.6-liter V6 with 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft (385 Nm) and the 6.2-liter V8 with 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft (617 Nm) are already available in dealer lots around the country.
