Chess, Not Checkers – Audi Has Pulled Off a Profitable First Half of the Year

With a disastrous chip shortage affecting everything tech-related, gas prices going haywire, and overall market uncertainty, some automakers are sweating bullets. Yet others have managed to rake in massive profits in the year's first half, against all odds.

Even though Audi's brand sales figures dropped, the company still increased its revenue by 2% in the first half of 2022, mainly thanks to Bentley and Lamborghini. The British luxury brand owned by the German automaker sold 7,398 this year, 199 more than in the previous year.

In addition, Lamborghini increased its sales by 4.9% compared to the same period in 2021. Meanwhile, Ducati saw a decline in its sales from 34,515 in 2021 to 33,265 in 2022.

This result is even more significant given the company's business in China that has been affected by lockdowns. In addition, the chip shortage also affected the carmaker's sales. Overall, the Audi Group boosted its revenue to €29.9 billion ($30.47 billion), reaching a new high operating profit of €4.9 billion ($4.99 billion).

…we have mastered the turbulence well and systematically seized the opportunities at the same time,” said Jürgen Rittersberger, Member of the Board of Management for Finance and Legal Affairs of AUDI AG.

Audi has also managed to increase the number of all-electric vehicles by 52.7%, delivering 50,033 vehicles compared to just 32,775 vehicles in the first half of 2021. Thus, the automaker has increased its all-electric vehicle shares to 6.3%.

Moreover, after successfully rolling out its pilot charging hub in Nuremberg in the first half of 2022, the automaker plans to expand this program. By the end of this year, Audi will open similar charging hubs in Salzburg and other locations and expand further in the next two years.

Audi said they will focus on growing their offer in the EV segment for the next half of the year. They will expand both the electric vehicle range and the charging solutions.

…the current situation in the world makes it clear that economies and society need to move away from fossil fuels even quicker. Expanding renewable energies and switching to e-mobility are important steps in this direction,” said Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG.
