Chery Wants More Foreign Cake

It's been a while since we've heard anything from one of China's most active brands in 2009, when it was actively seeking to get its hands on several troubled European manufacturers of the time. Hidden well in the huge pool of over 100 Chinese auto brands, Chery is continuing to plan world domination, in silence and, apparently, with some degree of success.

Having several important projects underway in Europe, Chery seems to seek fortune and fame outside China, a country who is already flooded with both local and international brands. Chery wants, according to Reuters, no more, no less than to increase vehicle exports by over 30 percent in 2011.

According to company spokesman Jin Yibo, Chery sold 91,986 vehicles last year on the export markets, which are primarily located in Asia, the Middle East, South America and Africa. For 2011, the company's target has been set at 120,000 units.

This year's target is only the first small step for Chery to become a significant player on the international market. Already operating no less than 16 plants outside China, Chery is now eying big markets like the US, which it plans on conquering with electric vehicles.

By the end of 2010, Chery announced plans to launch in the US no less than three electric models (the year is almost half over, but we haven't seen a single such vehicle yet), for testing purposes at first.

"If everything goes smoothly, the trial operation of Chery's S18 electric cars will start in the United States by the end of 2011," Yuan Tao, general manager of Chery's new energy vehicle branch said at the end of last year.
