Pickings have been slim at this year's Beijing Motor Show. However, the gap left by the European and American companies has been filled by the locals. One of our favorite vehicles to look at is the Chery FV2030, a design study that previews what Chinese cars may look like 14 years from now.
While blatant copies still exist, Chery is one of the most reputable local carmakers. We know them as the state-owned Chinese company that bought Jaguar Land Rover in 2012. However, they also have the promising Qoros brand and their designers have their own vision of future transportation.
The FV2030 has less in common with the Range Rovers and more in common with the Astron Martin DBX. The body is long and sleek, with a coupe-like roof that stretches over clean gullwing doors. These swing up to reveal a silver-trimmed cabin for four people. It's about as sexy as anything made by Giugiaro while the natural honeycomb look of the glass reminds us of the BMW Next 100 Concept. Like the Bavarian's car, the crossover also has "smart pilotless technology" which means it has some autonomous driving features (in case the lack of mirrors didn't give it away).
The black grille makes the brushed red body pop out even more. Large air intakes have been fitted for styling reasons, but this concept is electric. The wheels are about as cool as the car and feature a wireless charging system. This smart idea could make the induction process more efficient.
Instead of conventional design, the FV2030's headlights and taillights are incorporated into one disc-shaped unit per corner that seems to cut through the body from inside. It's a bit like the Bugatti Chiron.
While we have no doubt that Chery can make a stunning concept, putting it into production is impossible. The company is also showing the new Tiggo 7 SUV, Tiggo 3X SUV, Chery Karry K60 and a few other goodies. Yet nothing comes close to the beauty of this study.
