Porsche has the bad habit of designing all its sportscars to fit snugly into the niches its marketing people assigned them. That's why, even though the Boxster S and the base 911 Carrera have the same 3.4-liter engine, the cheaper of the two has less power.
A very credible, but at the same time quite pricey solution is to go to Pfaffenhausen and as RUF for one of these things. From a distance, their 3800 S looks like any other 981 generation Boxster, but come a little closer and you begin to notice how the bumpers flare out and look like they want to cut you.
The design is the first clue you get that this is no normal Boxster. Well hidden behind your typical overcomplicated engine covers is a 3.8-liter engine from the Carrera S. You get 420 horsepower from that, a lot more than in any Boxster. The power comes in at a screaming 7,400rpm and is accompanied by 450 Nm of torque, arriving at 5,600rpm.
You need a lot of traction to control the power increase, so the RUF comes with new footwear in the form of 10J x 20-inch wheels shod with 245/35ZR20 and 285/30ZR20 Michelins. Also fitted as standard is the Porsche LSD, which has a 22/27 percent locking action.
For those seeking the pure, unaltered driving feel of the 70s, it's the prefect car, yours for a measly €108,533.50 + VAT + delivery & registration. That might sound like a lot, but it's actually one of the cheapest RUF products, so it's actually a bargain.
