Check Out the Hydrogen-Powered BMW i8 in Motion

After teasing us with a couple of photos of what they consider to be the future (hydrogen powered cars) BMW is now publishing videos of the one model that gathered the most attention: the BMW i8 hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

The car we’re looking at here has the same basic layout as the regular i8. However, the drivetrain is made up of different components that have stepped up to replace the electric motor and the 1.5-liter internal combustion unit.

In the middle of the car, there’s a tank that can store hydrogen at a pressure of no less than 350 bar. That tank makes sure you can cover up to 300 miles (480 km) in one sitting thanks to the revolutionary engine that sits behind.

This car is actually a pretty old prototype that was built back in 2012 ahead of the unveiling of the ‘normal’ i8 and ahead of BMW ever cutting a deal with Toyota to join forces in researching fuel-cell vehicles. Therefore, it was pulled out of testing a while back, being replaced by newer, more up to date models these days.

As you can see, compared to the i8, there are some aerodynamic changes quite visible as well. The overall shape is the same but the front fascia, the side profile and even the rear end are completely different in looks, aiming at both providing a better airflow around the car but also at keeping components nice and cool.

Truth be told, it’s hard to choose between the two but if your life depended on it, which one would you go for, ignoring the stats, just based on the looks?
