Next weekend, one man will be lucky enough to be driving one of the few BMW M1 IMSA that are still running on the world-famous Laguna Seca. Since this car is rather rare to come by, you probably already figured out that BMW North America won’t be giving its keys to just anyone out there.
The man we’re talking about is Randy Pobst, a race car driver and the one that takes all the latest cars Motor Trend tests for a quick spin around various tracks, to see how they perform. He surely knows what he’s doing and we’ve seen him in action more than once.
However, it’s one thing when you’re driving for the camera and a completely different things when you’re going all out in a competition. The second scenario is the one we’re about to show you, featuring Randy in a BMW E36 3 Series, racing in the American Endurance Racing series.
Needless to say that he blew his competition out of the water but it wasn’t all thanks to him alone. His car had one or two things to do with it, the E36 3er keeping up with the constant abuse inflicted on it by the driver. After all, that’s what this car was made for, right?
Randy expressed admiration for other BMW before as well as criticism. After driving the BMW M235i he said it’s his favorite Bimmer released in the last decade. On the other hand, he didn’t hesitate to call the F10 M5 and M6 Gran Coupe heavy and bloated when driving them on a track.
Probably looking to change his mind, BMW decided to allow him to drive one of their old-school cars. Not just any car either...
