Cheap Choo Choo 1985 Chevrolet El Camino SS Gives Us Mixed Feelings

In the world of custom car builders, the name Choo Choo Customs is intertwined with that of the Chevrolet El Camino. Over the years, the group has been responsible for a great deal of custom bowtie-made coupe utility machines, some great to look at, others less so.

We’re not sure what category this one fits in. A 1985 El Camino SS in origin, it wears a Choo Choo body kit that makes it more aggressive than Chevrolet ever envisioned it. Still, the color kind of cancels it all out.

Officially, the paint is called Gold Metallic, but for us, it looks downright brown ugly. And that’s not the only thing wrong with the car. At the front, on the passenger side, there’s a big dent spoiling the body kit, and elsewhere “scratches and nicks from dragging on a curb” are visible.

On the other hand, when looked at from a certain angle, the build is impressive. The added body parts make the El Camino look longer and lower (air suspension has a say in that as well) than it ever was, and the fiberglass tonneau cover for the carpet bed in one fine touch.

The disservice Gold Metallic does to the exterior is quickly forgotten once the doors open. The hues of brown and tan spread all over perfectly match, and send across the right message of warmth.

Under the forward sloping hood, the SS packs a 305-ci (5.0-liter) V8 engine equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor. Power is sent to the wheels through an automatic transmission. We are not given any info on the performance numbers for this powertrain.

The Choo Choo 1985 Chevrolet El Camino SS, no matter how you or we feel about it, is a true bargain. The pickup is for sale with almost 90,000 miles (145,000 km) on the clock for just $13,500.
