ChargePoint Plans to Make EV Charging Easier for Drivers Living in Apartments

For those up-to-date with the EV / PHEV world, ChargePoint might sound familiar. For those who never heard of them, here's a crash course in what they do and more important, in their latest product.

ChargePoint is an EV charging network (with more than 21,000 locations) and charging station provider that wants to give plug-in hybrid owners the possibility of charging their cars even if they live in an apartment or a condo.

In other words, the eco-conscious driver will now have the chance of charging their cars at their individual home parking spot, just as they would at work or around the city. Moreover, their solution comes "with no long-term commitment, 24/7 support and a charging station provided to the resident at no cost."

As nothing comes for free, there's a catch to their claim. Those property managers that decide to join the initiative will prepare the individual parking spots with wiring for EV charging and set a price for electricity. In addition, ChargePoint will request a one-time activation fee from the resident plus a monthly subscription fee for EV charging services.

There's the possibility of contributing on a month-to-month basis, as there's no long-term contract signed by the parties. Clients get a level 2 charging station, and they can pay the property owner for their energy usage through a ChargePoint account.

According to statistics, more than 2.3 million EVs are expected to be on U.S. roads by 2020. In addition, 5 to 10 percent of these cars will be owned by residents of multifamily homes. Mix that up with the fact that 80 percent of EV charging takes place at a driver’s home, and you can see why ChargePoint's Multi-family Home Service could become a success.
