CGI-Free Scenes from Mad Max: Fury Road Look so Much Better Than the Final Ones

If there was one other thing the 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road movie had too much of, besides Tom Hardy grunts, it had to be the special effects. I mean, those guys went overboard with the blue screens and added explosions, right?

If you only watched the movie and didn't do any research, you'd be forgiven to believe that. The latest Mad Max production is basically a festival of stunts peppered with things going boom and flames coming out of every orifice, so given the ease with which all this can be generated on a computer, it's natural to assume it's what director George Miller did.

But he and the rest of the production team insisted they shot on film as much of it as it was possible. And, remember, this was a movie with people hanging on top of giant pendulums attached to the back of various vehicles blasting it through the desert. And did we mention there was fire coming out of every available orifice?

But it's not just the dedication of this men that deserves to be saluted, it's the actual product of their work as well. There isn't much of a plot to the movie, nor are there any Oscar-worthy acting performances, and yet it's nice just to sit and watch a continuous onslaught of action from time to time. You know, just put your brain on pause and let it rest in ways other than sleeping.

Seeing this montage of raw, CGI-free scenes from the movie, though, it made me think just how good it could have looked if they didn't give that Hollywood final polish. Dustier, dirtier images would have built a much more authentic Mad Max universe, or at least one that was closer to what we've been used to in the first two movies. The fact that they shot so much of it the old fashioned way would have allowed this, but in the end, the decision was made to put some makeup on.
