Caterham is currently a limited-appeal sports car manufacturer with an equally-limited fan base, of trackday enthusiasts and a more serious kind of ‘boy racer’. However, according to autocar.co.uk, who recently spoke to Caterham boss, Tony Fernandes, the British manufacturer has big plans ahead.
Aside from the fact that they want to become a more mainstream brand, following in the footsteps of Porsche, to make a much wider array of cars, as Fernandes himself says: “The ultimate ambition is to do what Porsche has done, and grow beyond being a sports car manufacturer into a mainstream car brand – SUVs, city cars, whatever the market wants.”
However, an even higher ambition for them is to build their very own supercar, and since they have acquired F1 experience, as well as the services of F1 designer Mike Gascoyne, who joined the company’s road car division to assist in the development of the Alpine sports car, for Renault, they have everything going for them, at the moment.
We must admit that the idea of a Caterham supercar is rather tantalizing, and while it may not come in the near future, Tony Fernandes is confident that it will materialize some, going on to say: “There is a long way to go, but we can see a day when we’d like to have a true halo car.”
