Caterham Boosts Seven Production

British manufacturer Caterham announced today it plans to increase production of the Seven sportscar by about 10 percent, due to the "above-forecast" demand growth in the UK and mainland Europe.

The new plan calls for production output to increase to 420 units a year, which in turn will force Caterham to increase workforce as well. Additional personnel will be recruited to come to the aid of the 45 workers at the Dartford, Kent facility.

When we saw the first signs of sales activity stalling last year, we cut our cloth accordingly in terms of resource and costs. I’ve always worked on the basis that I’d rather face the problem of how to build more cars, than the problem of how to sell them, so it’s gratifying to now be manning back up to cope with the extra demand," Ansar Ali, Caterham Cars managing director said in a release.

Launched earlier this year, the Caterham Superlight R300 (part of the Seven range) is powered by a 2.0l Ford Duratec engine tuned by Caterham Powertrain to develop 175 bhp. It allows the car to accelerate from naught to sixty miles in 4.5 seconds and can get to a top speed of 140 mph.

Our international sales drive is delivering the results thanks not only to favourable exchange rates but more importantly the quality of business partners we have established in markets including France, Italy, Japan and Germany,” Ali added.

The Seven is a British lightweight sportscar, created by Colin Chapman and launched as the Lotus 7 in 1957. Caterham Cars has been selling the Seven since the late 1950s. Today, starting price for one of the Seven is 24,995 pounds.
