Castagna Milano might sound unfamiliar, and for all the right reasons. If you visit the Italian coachbuilder’s website, you’re met with a logo, a white background, and nothing else. Not even contact information!
But the Milan-based outfit has a big plan, and that is to create the first-ever A8 Allroad with the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine the Volkswagen Group also uses in the Bentley Continental GT. As opposed to the British grand tourer, the W12 in the full-size sedan makes do with 585 PS (577 horsepower) instead of 635 PS (626 horsepower).
At the end of the day, that’s still a lot considering the torque this engine develops at full song. Two renderings of the A8 Allroad W12 were posted by Castagna Milano on Facebook, showcasing… wait for it… the previous generation of the full-size sedan. That’s right, ladies and gents; this project appears to be outdated from square one!
As opposed to the D5, the D4 generation with the 6.3-liter naturally aspirated W12 had 500 PS (493 horsepower) and 629 Nm (461 pound-feet) when it rolled off the assembly line. It’s not much, but not sufficient either for a vehicle of this size and curb weight. Speaking of which, gave you noticed the carbon-fiber roof with a gloss-black finish?
We’re not exactly sure what Castagna Milano has been thinking, not with those roof bars and plastic cladding on all four corners. On the other hand, the A8 Allroad W12 is so delightfully absurd that we’d wish to see it driven up a ski slope by someone who would spend Ferrari GTC4Lusso T money on such a jim-dandy abomination.
If the Q7 isn’t to your liking, then the largest wagon that Audi has to offer right now is the A6 Avant. The RS6 Avant is in the process of being redesigned from the ground up, expected with a twin-turbo V8.
There’s talk of hybrid or even plug-in hybrid assistance, which wouldn’t be impossible to implement considering the synergies between Audi and Porsche. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, for reference, has 680 PS (671 horsepower) and 850 Nm (626 pound-feet) to offer.
