Cars in 1993's Demolition Man Looked Just Like the Volkswagen XL1

Watching late night television is usually a really bad idea, a complete waste of time, but sometimes, sometimes you stumble upon a real gem.

Because Silvester is still such a badass, even to this day, I watched the 1993 movie Demolition Man the other day. If you haven't seen it, or forgot what it's about, let me just remind you that it's about the year 2032, when a maniac from the past is defrosted and creates chaos. Officer John Spartan is also revived… for the win.

But that's not the interesting part. The movie has iPads, Skype video calling and driverless cars, despite being made two full decades ago. What strikes me is just how similar the car they use in the movie is to the VW XL1 hybrid: reduced rear overhangs, strange doors and an overall similarity in shape.

So what is it, this car from the future–past movie? It's a General Motors concept car called the Ultalite. Even the name suggest similarities to Volkswagen's carbon-fiber tub, super lightweight car.
