Carmarthenshire County Council Turns Green with i-MiEV Delivery

Electric cars and hybrids seem to make a lot of sense for local authorities around the world, as we are reporting fleets of such cars being delivered to various cities and organizations across the glove just about every day. Mitsubishi Motors UK has just announced that the Carmarthenshire County Council will be the first authority in Wales to make use of a its fleet of two new i-MiEVs.

The pair of vehicles is funded by a £500,000 sustainable transport improvement plan for Carmarthenshire, paid for by the Welsh Assembly Sustainable Travel Centres funding. Both have also received bright liveries and will be used by the council staff as part of its co-ordinated pool car system.

The county was one of only four areas in Wales to receive the funding, which also pays for some walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure.

“We are pleased to be able to lead on the introduction of electric powered pool cars that will provide a facility for officers to travel by more sustainable forms of transport for work related travel journeys,” said Council’s Transport Manager, Stephen Pilliner.

“We are proud to be the first local authority in Wales to use electric cars as part of our fleet. It not only proves our commitment to the use of sustainable resources, but will cut down on our carbon emissions and also our fleet fuel costs − it’s a win-win situation all round,”
Pilliner added.

The i-MiEV was launched back in 2009 in Japan and is the fist pure-electric car available on the global market from a major manufacturer. Last year, it managed to score the Vehicle of the Year award from GreenFleet.
