Carlsson Pumps up Understated Non-AMG E-Class W212

The unofficial definition of a “sleeper” or “Q-car” used to include most AMG models back in the day, but the current Affalterbach lineup is a bit far from it, since AMG designers have been asked to “diversify” in recent years so as to gather more attention on the brand.

Nowadays, if you want a fast Mercedes-Benz that doesn't scream “Look at me!” every time you catch it with your eyes, you're in for some tough luck.

The only way in which you can indulge yourself with a fast but understated three-pointed star model from the modern era is to buy a non-AMG model and take it to a tuner that knows what he's doing with Mercedes-Benz tech.

For the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212, one such tuner might very well be Carlsson, who recently launched a variety of visual and technical modifications that can make the model faster without making it more flamboyant.

Almost every engine in the E-Class lineup has been modified via a Carlsson ECU upgrade, with the biggest numbers being obviously seen by the E 500 model.

As far as the four-cylinder engines go, the E 200 CGI no longer has 184 hp and 270 Nm (199 lb ft) of torque) to 211 hp and 330 Nm (243 lb ft) of torque, while the turbocharged V6 diesel goes from 252 hp and 620 Nm (457 lb ft) of torque to no less than 310 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque.

Going upwards, the new E 400's twin-turbocharged three-liter V6 gets from 333 hp and 480 Nm ((354 lb ft) of torque to a much more fitting 385 hp and 550 Nm (406 lb ft) of torque.

By far the most appropriate variant for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212 sleeper is the E 500 model, which gets Carlsson-ized from 408 hp and 600 Nm (443 lb ft) of torque to no less than 523 hp and 730 Nm (538 lb ft) of torque.

A number of exterior and interior upgrades are also available, but nothing that would make you ashamed to park the car in front of a theatre or an opera house.
