The Nissan Leaf has sold around 35,000 units so far, and while some owners are pleased with its performance and range, most aren’t. The main issue is the battery pack which offers a rather limited range, as well as rapidly losing capacity in areas with hot climate.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is well aware of the issue and, in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal said: "There is a second generation of battery coming (online) now...which is less costly than the previous one. We are in a race in which you reduce the costs and adapt the price." This means that they are treating the problem with the utmost care and attention, in order to avoid any such problems with the upcoming car.
If the next Nissan Leaf is to truly succeed and be a hit, then it must first be built around a battery pack which offers at least twice the range of the current car, otherwise its sales will be even poorer.
